Farmer Becky's Spring Planting Update

Updated: Jun 30, 2023

Spring planting season in Texas is a marathon, and I'm pleased we are on the final leg! This week we are preparing our last acre of beds and getting excited to plant our heat-loving crops including peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, and melons. In January we began by planting onions, baby greens, and radishes (a lot of what you are getting now in the share!) In February we planted leeks, potatoes, broccoli, kohlrabi, cauliflower, cabbages and lettuce. In March we planted basil, baby greens, dill, cilantro, turnips, zucchini, cucumbers, acorn squash, fennel, peas, and green beans. We are aiming to have all remaining acreage planted by the end of next week!

Some things to look forward to this summer we are planting now:

This year I'm growing a much wider selection of tomatoes. In addition to assorted cherry tomatoes, I'm growing heirloom San Marzano canning tomatoes, green, orange, and purple slicers. Look out for our exciting tomato selections in the share beginning the end of May through July.

Melons are in the works to be planted all summer long. We will be starting Korean melons, watermelons, and cantaloupes which will be ready in June. What other melons do you want in the share this summer?

Eggplant: many of y’all know that I grew up in Thailand and cook lots of SE Asian inspired meals at home :-) I have such a hard time finding fresh Thai eggplants, and so I decided to grow two varieties on the farm this summer. Look out for long green and round Thai eggplant! (don't worry, we’ll include recipes)

Peppers: Heatless habaneros and poblanos are new items for this year, along with plenty of sweet Italian, bell peppers and shishitos.

What’s Up Next in the Shares?

We have had just over a month since we began seeding and transplanting out new Spring crops, which means we will be greeting LOTS OF NEW CROPS soon.

IN the next two weeks: Look out for baby radishes, bok choi, leeks, spring onions, lettuce heads, daikon, collards, baby kale, arugula and other greens.

IN the next 3-4 weeks: Look out for, zucchini, kohlrabi, carrots, beets, broccolini, basil, dill, spinach, kale, and turnips.

IN the next 4-5 weeks: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, cucumbers, fennel, peas, green beans

As always, thanks for reading! With spring bounty coming out of the fields, we're looking to add some more CSA members. Do your farmer a big favor, and tell your friends! The veggies don't get better than this!
