Spring Planting at VRDNT: What's Happening

I don't care what the calendar says. It’s officially Spring. Henbit is blooming, butterflies are back, and crops and weeds are germinating! The last few weeks, we have been making beds and planting out new crops for Spring. Spring In Central Texas has two waves– In late Jan/ early February we can start planting things that can tolerate a light frost think: kale, broccoli, lettuce onions…. Then, in March, after the danger of Frost (has most likely) passed, we plant out all our tender crops: think tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumber, etc…

SO FAR we have planted over two acres with all our frost-hardy crops. We are catching our breath and weeding this week and will start planting all the warm weather stuff at the beginning of March.

Here is a list of everything we’ve planted so far and when you can expect to see it in your CSA boxes (green is available window).

If you don't see your favorite warm weather stuff, don't worry! We have a whole greenhouse of plants we are still waiting to plant out in the next few weeks. We’ll send you updates on our tomato/pepper/melon plantings as we get further into Summer. :-)

Did you know we plant crops in three distinct ways at VRDNT? See the videos and read more here.
